The Facts

Date: Wednesday, December 31, 2008

Time: 5:00 PM

Place: King Street - view route map

What: A one-mile race limited to runners with a time of 8-minutes or less, on King Street to kick-off First Night Alexandria

Location: King Street from Market Square to Union Station

Why: To bring more people to Alexandria to celebrate New Year's Eve!

Impact on YOU: If you are a retail business and open on New Year's Eve, this will bring you MORE business! If you are closed, there will be minimal to no impact ons you. In either case, we hope you will leave interior and outside lights on to keep the street and sidewalks BRIGHT!

If you are a resident, be aware there will be a lot of runners coming up King Street and come out and cheer them on!

If you are a restaurant you may be impacted by folks who want to come and eat early! A 5:00 pm start for the race should not impact your customers' ability to get to your restaurant. Very few New Year's Eve celebrants start with a 5:00 pm dinner! However, you might consider an early bird special for race watchers! As soon as the runners pass, the street behind them (and the cross streets) will be open. Come out and cheer on the runners; they will pass quickly and spectators may follow you inside for a beverage!

If you are a driver, you can pass through Old Town via Union, Lee or Fairfax Streets or Russell Road to Callahan Drive without interruption. Police officers and volunteers will be in each block to assist you with questions on December 31!
