What is First Night Alexandria?

First Night Alexandria (FNA) is a family-friendly, community-wide New Year’s Eve celebration showcasing live music, art, and entertainment at multiple venues across the city. Since 1994, it’s been Alexandria’s signature way to ring in the New Year with creativity, connection, and joy.


When does First Night Alexandria take place?

This year’s celebration will be held on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, with performances and activities running from 12 PM to midnight, culminating in a fireworks display over the Potomac River.

 

Where does it happen?

Daytime activities will take place at the George Washington Masonic Memorial (12 PM–4 PM), and evening festivities will fill the Carlyle Community, Old Town and Waterfront with music, food, and fun for all ages.

 

Is this event free?

No, but this year in light of the economic challenges that have impated our community, the cost to attend is its lowest in decades – only $10 per person 2 years and older.  Guests are also invited to make a donation in support of local artists and performers, ensuring this beloved tradition remains accessible to everyone. What types of performances can I expect?

Over 20 acts will include live music, dance, comedy, and interactive art experiences featuring both local and regional performers.

 

How do I find the performance schedule?

A detailed performance schedule will be available on the First Night Alexandria website. You can also follow us on social media for updates.

 

Do venues have capacity limits?

Yes. Indoor admission is first-come, first-served, so we recommend arriving early to secure your spot at your favorite shows.

Fireworks & Countdown

Where can I watch the fireworks?

Fireworks will light up the sky over the Potomac River at 7 PM and again at midnight. Great viewing areas include Waterfront Park, Jones Point Park, and Founders Park.

Family & Accessibility

Is First Night Alexandria family-friendly?

Absolutely! We offer special Kids Celebrate! Seniors Day Party and other daytime programs, hands-on activities, and family performances designed for all ages noon – 4pm at the GW Masonic Memorial.

 

Is the event accessible?

Yes. Venues are ADA-accessible where possible.

 

Can I bring my pet?

Please leave your furry friends at home. Service animals are welcome.

Getting There
& Parking

Where can I park?

Public parking garages and street parking are available throughout Old Town and the Carlyle area. We also encourage visitors to use Metro (King Street Station), rideshare services, or the free DASH bus.

 

Will streets be closed?

Yes, certain streets near the Carlyle and Waterfront areas may close on demand for public safety.

 

Where is the best place to park for First Night?

We encourage you to plan your evening based on the performers of preference, and to consider parking closest to where you want to end the evening as public transportation will have ended and there will be crowds following the fireworks.

 

Is transportation provided between venues?

All of the venues are within a 1 mile walking distance from the GW Masonic Temple to the Potomac River. There are lots of parking garages in the area that you can consider as well as street parking, bikes, scooters and the trolley system, which is available until 11 PM.

Health, Safety, and COVID-19

Participants voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19 and agree not to hold First Night Alexandria, Inc. liable, should you become ill. Masks are strongly recommended at First Night Alexandria.

In the event of an emergency the City of Alexandria Police, Fire, and Emergency Response will be available and on-site throughout Old Town.

Call 9-1-1 if you have an emergency.

What happens if it rains?

First Night Alexandria is a rain-or-shine event. In the case of severe weather, updates will be posted on our website and social media channels.

You can include and additional donation at the time of your ticket purchase. Your contributions help fund local performers, family programs, and educational initiatives.

 

Are donations tax-deductible?

Yes! First Night Alexandria is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
