Volunteer Signup & Information

First Night Alexandria needs YOU to help us throw the best family-friendly New Year’s Eve party anywhere. You can volunteer with your family, a friend, a co-worker, a partner, spouse or volunteer by yourself. This is a great way to make new friends and be part of a community celebration of the New Year through the performing arts: music, dance, magic, games, comedy, clowns, storytelling and “Fireworks on the Potomac” at midnight.

Are you interested? Sign up by clicking the “Sign up HERE” button below and join the Volunteer Team. Questions?, need help? you can contact the volunteer coordinator, Joe Shumard, any time via f[email protected] or by text/phone at 703-408-4483.

Age Requirements

First Night volunteers MUST be at least 16 years old, and all volunteers under 18 years old MUST have permission from parent or guardian.

Volunteer Together

People who would like to volunteer together should identify their requested partner(s) on the signup form (in the comments section).

A free admission badge and a box meal. Volunteers usually serve about 3 hours, so there is plenty of time to enjoy the fun at First Night Alexandria!

Please use ONE application
for each volunteer.

Volunteer Assignments

For all locations on New Year’s Eve, volunteers are asked to “sign in” at least one hour before their shift begins at our volunteer headquarters at Durant Arts Center (1605 Cameron Street, Alexandria 22314). You may do this as early as 4 p.m. and you will receive your free admission badge and a box meal.

In-person Training. This year we are offering a one-hour opportunity to meet your fellow volunteers, find out about your responsibilities, and focus on how our operation works. This training will be held at American Legion Post 24 near Market Square in Old Town Alexandria. Specifically in the Ballroom up the steps at 400 Cameron Street at 10 a.m. on the day before New Year’s Eve, December 30, 2018. We hope to see you there!

Online Training.  Online video training will be posted here after Christmas.

Kids Karnivals. A New Year’s Eve celebration for families with children 12 and under! Three locations focused on kids for families with children 2-12 years old. Volunteers help with face painting, games, balloons, and more.

Sunday Badge Pickup. A new opportunity for our patrons to purchase and pick up First Night badges “ahead of the crowd” on the day before New Year’s Eve. If you have an iPad (or similar tablet) we could use your help on Sunday (12/30/18) early afternoon.

Due to a new badge design, the infamous Badge Assembly Team is retired. We still need help to sort and distribute the badges. If you are available we could use your help on the Sunday before New Year’s Eve (12/30/18) from Noon to 3 p.m. or on New Year’s Eve at Noon at Durant Arts Center (Volunteer HQ).

New Vests replace the aprons. This is a more usable design to identify our volunteers with thanks to Virginia Paving Company.

New Badge Pickup Locations to help distribute badges purchased online. Three “Badge Stations” will be located near the King Street Metro Station, on King Street between S. Patrick & S. Alfred Streets, and at Market Square. If you have some familiarity with the iPad (or similar tablet devices) and/or experience running a cash register, your help is needed here.
